Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Newland to Host Briefing for Tribal Leaders

WASHINGTON – Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs Bryan Newland will host a briefing for Tribal leaders on the President’s FY 2022 budget request for Indian Affairs.  The briefing will take place via conference call on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. EDT. 

President Biden’s FY 2022 request for the Office of the Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs (AS-IA) and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), is $2.7 billion, $609.9 million over the FY 2021 enacted level.  For the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE), which has a separate budget from the BIA’s, the total amount is $1.3 billion in current appropriations, $110.6 million over FY 2021.  For the Bureau of Trust Funds Administration (BTFA), which also has a separate budget, the total amount is $110.7 million, $2.3 million over FY 2021.  

“The President’s FY 2022 budget request for Indian Affairs recognizes that key to building back better in Indian Country are serious investments that support Tribal self-sufficiency, self-determination, and sovereignty,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs Bryan Newland.  “It ensures that Indian Affairs’ mission of service to Tribes continues and supports its role in maintaining DOI’s nation-to-nation relationship and trust responsibilities.”
