Indigenous Nutrition Knowledge

The Indigenous Food Hubs initiative uses Indigenous Knowledge to support Native Food Sovereignty. It includes culture, health, nutrition, land management, and regenerative agriculture.

Some of the students’ lessons included making Navajo cake, safely using a traditional horno, preparing bison meat, and starting community gardens — all of which were part of the BIE’s culturally relevant curriculum.

They also become more aware of the nutritional value of their food and how to make simple improvements. Lt. Cmdr. Cavanaugh teaches students how to create meals that follow the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Dietary Guidelines using the MyPlate method or the My Native Plate method from Indian Health Services. She also emphasizes the importance of limiting screen time, getting enough sleep, and staying active.
