Lt. Cmdr. Casey Cavanaugh

To support the Indigenous Food Hubs initiative, the BIE has hired its first national nutrition consultant. Lt. Cmdr. Casey Cavanaugh began her role in September 2023. She is a member of the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes from the Duck Valley Indian Reservation in Owyhee, Nevada. 

Her role includes: 

  • Serving as a contact for schools. 

  • Helping to build nutrition programs alongside school staff. 

  • Improving school meals to be healthy and culturally relevant.

 

She focuses on developing nutrition and training standards, incorporating community-based agriculture and Indigenous knowledge, and connecting with Native food vendors and producers.
