Haskell Indian Nations University hosted its annual end-of-semester student art show, celebrating creativity across various disciplines. The exhibit featured impressive work from over 60 students enrolled in Design 1, Painting 1, Drawing 1 and 2, Figure Drawing, Art Appreciation, and English courses.
Submissions ranged from intricate beadwork to unique sculptures crafted from shoes, showcasing Haskell's talent and diversity. This year, the Lawrence Art Guild generously donated over $200 in prizes, awarding first, second and third-place winners and 10 honorable mentions.
Each of the 13 recognized students received a one-year membership to the Art Guild’s Emerging Artist Program, granting access to workshops, studios and exhibition spaces to further their artistic growth.
First Place - "That Time of the Month"
Mixed-media drawing by Figure Drawing student Morgan Noisey (Cherokee Nation), inspired by artwork of Aida Makoto
Second Place - “Winterberries”
Ballpoint pen drawing by Drawing 2 student Dylan Kinlicheenie (Jicarilla Apache, Navajo, Tohono O’odham)
Third Place - “Strength in Community"
Ledger drawing by Art Appreciation student Renee Stephens (Muscogee Nation)
Stephens created her drawing during a ledger art workshop hosted by the Spencer Museum of Art’s Indigenous Arts Initiative. She shared the inspiration behind her piece.
“I drew a spirit blowing wind toward a bear, with pawprints and footprints following underneath," Stephens said. "This represents the Muscogee creation story. One day, a heavy fog blanketed the valley, causing panic among the people as they couldn’t see one another. The Creator of Breath heard their sorrow and sent a gust of wind to clear the fog. This wind not only restored visibility but also brought the people together into smaller clans. The Creator of Breath knew they couldn’t survive alone. Whatever animal they saw first became the emblem of their clan. For me, it’s the bear.”
The Haskell student art show has become an annual highlight, attracting local artisans each year. Special thanks to Art Guild Board members Maria S. Martin, Janet Lynn Zuk, Kathleen Hayward, and Gil Ortiz for sponsoring and judging the awards. Gratitude also goes to art instructors David Titterington and Juan Diego Gaucin Carrillo for their mentorship and guidance of Haskell students.
