More than 100 students competed in the Battle of the Books trivia competition on April 29, 2025, improving literacy skills and cultural connections among Native youth.

Students from four Bureau of Indian Education schools — Taos Day School, Jemez Day School, T’siya Day School, and Santa Fe Indian School — and two other schools joined for the competition. Students competed in two categories, elementary (grades 4–5) and middle school (grades 6–8). Teams of 6 students exhibited their knowledge of pre-selected books they read throughout the school year.

The event emphasizes Native-authored literature, giving students greater access to Native American voices and stories that reflect their identities and communities.

Initiated over a decade ago, Battle of the Books has grown into a culturally relevant alternative to mainstream reading contests. Organizers say tribal citizens began including titles after recognizing their limited representation in these types of events.

The Battle of the Books is not just about competition.

“It’s about encouraging students to engage with meaningful literature and strengthen their comprehension skills,” said Tina Martinez, event organizer and Taos Day School special education teacher..

Students either volunteer for the program or participate as part of their classroom curriculum. In addition to the book competition, students create original Battle of the Books-themed T-shirt designs. The winning designer receives a $50 prize, and t-shirts are also given to families from participating schools.

Battle of the Books has become a powerful platform to celebrate both literacy and Native American culture by giving young readers the chance to learn, compete and connect. Organizers are already planning to expand into a statewide competition in 2026.
