STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe’s need for cultural and economic well-being. In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.

Serving in a supportive capacity to a certified classroom teacher, the incumbent performs non- professional duties of an educational nature in a classroom environment which assures the functioning of a well-balanced academic program and relieves the classroom teacher of non-professional duties. The incumbent will work under the direction and guidance of the certified teacher.

In serving in a supportive capacity to a professional classroom teacher the incumbent performs non-professional duties of an educational nature in a classroom environment which assures the functioning of a well balanced academic program and which relieves the classroom teacher of non-professional duties.

With teacher assistance prepares lesson plans which would include objectives, methods and materials used in reviewing concepts which have been previously introduced by the teacher as well as reinforcing previously learned concepts.

Acting in a supportive capacity, instructs small groups of individual students many of which are experiencing learning and/or language difficulties. Instruction is based on a variety of sound educational methods developed and supervised by the teacher.

Is responsible for observing and reporting individual student interests, abilities, and problems and based on teacher direction, provides instruction and guidance to students in regard to emotional and social adjustments, such as homesickness, self-control, sharing habits, personal hygiene matters and behavior.

Supervises classroom and playground recreational activities as directed: demonstrates new games and instructions in the use and care of materials and equipment.

During absences of teacher, maintains discipline and conducts reviews of previous instruction, drill sessions, and recreational activities according to prearranged plans.

Based on guidance and approval from the teacher, develops and administers test instruments in conjunction with small group and individual instruction.
During class, small group or individual student work assignments on various individualized learning packets (e, g., reading, math, language), assists the teacher in reviewing student work in progress giving aid and direction as needed to the student.

Constructs instructional charts and exhibits, sets up and operates audio-visual equipment and utilizes other visual learning devices designed to supplement prescribed courses of study.

Maintains necessary class records, such as attendance reports, health charts, progress charts and other data as required.

Based on answer key, corrects a wide variety of tests, work sheets and homework assignments for the classroom teacher.

Prepares and arranges classroom furniture, materials, and equipment to fit teacher's plans, making sure that required supplies are available. Collects and stores materials, as instructed, and checks to see that equipment and materials are put away.

Duties performed are comparable but different according to individual student needs/problems during the course of instruction. Variations exist in the work with the incumbent concerned with factual situations and which deviate according to individual student response/condition.

INDIAN PREFERENCE POLICY:

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Must obtain and maintain background investigation.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Good distant vision in one eye and ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters are required, glasses permitted.

Ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, is required.

In most instances, an amputation of arm, hand, leg, or foot will not disqualify an applicant for appointment, although it may be necessary that this condition be compensated by use of satisfactory prosthesis.

In addition, applicants must have mental and emotional stability.

The position requires normal physical activity with the work, field travel, and to attendance at meetings and conferences from the duty station.
