STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe’s need for cultural and economic well-being. In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.

The School Maintenance Worker is responsible for a variety of duties of a general nature for proper operation, maintenance, and minor repair of school buildings, utilities and related structures. Duties require a knowledge of various trades at less than journeyman level involving plumbing, electrical, painting and carpentry skills. The School Maintenance Worker will also perform the full range of cleaning assignments for a school situation. Duties include:
1. Reviews work assignments, discusses specific work requests with the Maintenance Supervisor as needed, and completes work assigned.
2. Identifies routine maintenance needs and schedules required inspections.
3. Repairs damaged floors, walls, ceilings, windows, doors, steps, guardrails, etc.
4. Repaints surfaces using brush or rollers and pre-mixed paint.
5. Replaces minor electrical parts such as switches, plates, outlets,. etc., and repairs broken or frayed wiring.
6. Performs maintenance and minor repair of plumbing fixtures and pipes by replacing faucets, washers, pipe elbows, etc.; and cleans clogged drains and sewer lines.
7. Operates and maintains individual heating and cooling systems.
8. Performs minor maintenance such as changing light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, removal of graffiti, replacing door handles or panes of glass, etc.
9. Uses a variety of materials, chemicals and equipment to sweep, mop, scrub, .wax and polish. Cleans offices, classrooms, storage areas, hallways, entrance areas and other assigned areas. Cleans restrooms assuring that proper chemicals are utilized for proper sanitation; replaces soap and paper items.
10. Empties trash cans and removes trash to designated areas.
11. Hauls trash, mows grass, chops weeds, and trims shrubs.
12. Vacuums and cleans carpet,
13. Washes windows, blinds and blackboards.
14. Moves furniture for cleaning.
15. Assures equipment is properly cared for and maintained; replacing belts, brushes, etc., as necessary for continued efficiency.
16. Complies with all applicable health and safety requirements, including proper use of safety equipment

BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Education - High School or GED diploma is required.
Experience - Must have a minimum of one (1) year's experience in general maintenance or related work, demonstrating skill in at least three skill/craft areas.
All applicants must demonstrate the ability to follow written and oral instructions.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
A valid State Driver's license is a prerequisite. The work requires extensive driving between work sites throughout the geographic area of the Education Line Office, or school compound. A valid State Driver's license must be maintained as a condition of employment; failure to do so may result in removal from the position.
An annual physical examination is required. Incumbents may be required to wear personal protective equipment as necessary.
Incumbents of these positions must be able to lift over 50 pounds and be in excellent physical condition. Good distant vision in one eye and ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters are required, glasses permitted. Ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, is required except that some positions may be suitable for persons who are blind or deaf. In most instances, and amputation of arm, hand, leg or foot will not disqualify and applicant for appointment, although it may be necessary that this condition be compensated by use of satisfactory prosthesis. In addition, incumbents must have mental and emotional stability. Occasionally, incumbents may be required to travel for training purpose or attendance at meetings from the duty station.
