STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe’s need for cultural and economic well-being. In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.

INDIAN PREFERENCE POLICY:

Preference in filling vacancies is given to qualified Indian candidates in accordance with the Indian Preference Act of 1934 (Title 25, USC, Section 472). RESPONSIBILITIES:

School Maintenance Worker performs inspections, maintenance, and repairs to ensure that all students, staff, and the community are provided a safe, attractive, and clean, and healthy environment for learning and work.

Performs a variety of duties at buildings, facilities and grounds at an off-reservation boarding school. Buildings include ten residence halls, academic classrooms, kitchen and dining facility, gymnasium, auditorium, several offices, warehouse and storage sheds.
• Perform regular inspections of equipment and systems, reporting any abnormalities and hazards immediately to the Supervisor.
• Reviews work order assignments. Discusses specific work requests with the Supervisor, as needed, making sure orders have been written and approved before performing tasks, except in emergency situations. Completes work assigned.
• Maintains the physical facilities of the school by performing a wide variety of general upkeep and repair tasks, including but not limited to: replacing light bulbs, ceiling and floor tile replacement, roof and drain cleaning and repairs, servicing lock and hardware devices, welding, repairing, and replacing window screens, mirror cutting and replacements, wall repairs including patching and painting, boarding up and replacement of broken or damaged windows/doors, etc.
• Operates and maintains in a safe and operational condition all tools and equipment necessary to carry out job functions and responsibilities. efficiency.
• Ensures and follows all applicable proper safety procedures when operating equipment and complies with all fire, safety, health, and environmental regulations and laws such as OSHA and EPA.
• Maintains inventory and an adequate supply of parts and supplies frequently used in repairs, maintenance, and janitorial duties.
• The incumbent selects the tools necessary and decides on the methods and techniques to use in order to carry out and complete the task as efficiently and expeditiously as possible.

SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

High School or GED diploma is required.
Level 02 incumbent must have a minimum of one year’s experience in general maintenance or related work, demonstrating skill in at least three skill/craft areas.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

May be required to operate various motor vehicles as an incidental duty. Must possess and maintain as a condition of employment a valid states driver’s license. Failure to maintain a valid driver’s license and government travel may result in dismissal from government service.

Will be required as a condition of employment to have an annual physical. Incumbents may be required to wear personal protective equipment as necessary.

The incumbent is subject to background investigations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Incumbent must be able to lift over 50 pounds and be in excellent physical condition.

Good distant vision in one eye and ability to read printed material the size of typewritten characters without strain, is required.

Ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid is required.

An amputation of arm, hand, leg or foot will not disqualify applicants. It may be necessary that such condition be compensated with use of satisfactory prosthesis that does not create safety hazard for self or others.

Must have mental and emotional stability.

Incumbent will perform duties both outdoors and inside of buildings. May be required to climb up and complete work on scaffolds and ladders. The incumbent may perform work, which occasionally requires to be in a stretched, cramped or awkward position. This requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, kneel, bend, climb and work for short periods of time in tiring and uncomfortable positions.

The investigation may extend beyond the time covered by this form, when necessary to resolve issues.

After a suitability /fitness determination is made, the applicant may also be subject to continuous vetting which may include periodic reinvestigations to ensure the employee is continuing suitability for employment.
