Webinar: Vocational Shop Safety

The Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) in collaboration with the Indian Affairs Office of Facilities, Property and Safety Management-Division of Safety and Risk Management (DSRM) will conduct an webinar series held on the third Thursday of each month. As part of this series, BIE and DSRM will hold a webinar on Thursday, December 17, 2015 on Vocational Shop Safety. This one hour webinar is designed to establish safety awareness within vocational shops and laboratories. The presenter, Derrick Chee, will provide an overview of duties and responsibilities of an instructor, importance of rules and regulations, and proper use of hand and power tools.

Sovereignty in Indian Education Enhancement Program Pre-Grant Training Sessions

The Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) has announced the availability of funds through the Sovereignty in Indian Education Enhancement Program (SIE) to tribes and their tribal education agencies to promote tribal control and operation of BIE-funded schools on their reservations. The BIE will provide pre-grant application training to support interested tribes and tribal education departments in applying for SIE Program funding. BIE will offer two training sessions via webinar on Tuesday, December 8 and Friday, December 11, 2015.

Webinar: Excel-Pivot Table Training for BIE

Beginning in the fourth quarter of Fiscal Year 2015, BIE School Operations Division began transmitting standard reports to all BIE locations. Through the transformation of financial reporting, there has been a need identified to train staff on reviewing and modifying these reports in Excel. During this one hour training session on Thursday, December 3, 2015, BIE School Operations staff will demonstrate the development of the report, from data query to final report. The focus of this session will be on Filters and Pivot Tables in Excel. This webinar will be useful to BIE staff who reviews or prepares financial reports.

Johnson-O'Malley Program Tribal Consultation Sessions

The Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) will be conducting three consultation sessions between December 15 and 17, 2015 to obtain oral and written comments on issues concerning the Johnson O’Malley (JOM) program. The Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) is undertaking a reform of its entire administrative and management level to meet the needs of a changing tribal and school environment to improve academic student success. National Board Foundations for BIE Educators

These one-day workshops are designed for educators who work in Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) Schools as they embark on the National Board Certification process for the 2015-2016 cycle of certification. Working alongside other BIE educators and National Board Certified Teachers in Arizona, participants will engage in reflective dialogue and activities that provide an introduction to the National Board Certification process and materials set forth by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. A specific focus will be placed on preparation for engaging with Component 1 to help participants prepare for the assessment center experience.

In effort to increase fraud awareness, the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) Office of Inspector General (OIG) coordinates and conducts Fraud Awareness Briefings (FAB). On Thursday, September 10, 2015, DOI OIG Investigative Analyst, Vicki Josupait, will conduct a one-hour FAB that is designed to educate Bureau of Indian Education personnel, contractors and recipients about various fraud schemes and indicators, as well as the need for strong internal controls to help them to prevent and detect fraud. In this webinar, the FAB will discuss real case examples, and how and where to report wrong-doing that is suspected.

WEBINAR: Calculating the ISEP Funding and Formula

This webinar is a continuation of the BIE Basics on the BIE Budget. This presentation will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2015 from 4:00p.m. to 5:00 p.m. EDT and will discuss the Indian School Equalization Program (ISEP). ISEP formula funds are the primary funding for basic and supplemental educational programs at BIE-funded elementary and secondary schools. In SY 2015-2016, this funding will support an estimated 48,000 individual students with a calculated 41,330 Average Daily Membership (ADM) at BIE schools and dormitories.

This webinar is a continuation of the BIE Basics on the BIE Budget. This presentation will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will discuss the Administrative Support Grant, also known as the Tribal Support Cost. Administrative cost covers the cost of necessary administrative functions which the tribe or tribal organization incurs as a result of operating a BIE funded tribal elementary or secondary school.
