STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe’s need for cultural and economic well-being. In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.

INDIAN PREFERENCE POLICY:

Preference in filling vacancies is given to qualified Indian candidates in accordance with the Indian Preference Act of 1934 (Title 25, USC, Section 472). Verification Form BIA-4432 must be submitted with the application if claiming Indian Preference. RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serving in a supportive capacity to a certified classroom teacher, the incumbent performs non- professional duties of an educational nature in a classroom environment which assures the functioning of a well-balanced academic program and relieves the classroom teacher of non-professional duties. The incumbent will work under the direction and guidance of the certified teacher.

-With teacher assistance, prepares lesson plans, including objectives, methods and materials used in reviewing concepts which have been introduced by the teacher as well as reinforcing previously learned concepts. Prepares lesson plans independently without teacher assistance when necessary.

-Acting in a supportive capacity, instructs small groups or individual students who are experiencing learning and/or language difficulties. Instruction is based on a variety of sound educational methods developed and supervised by the teacher.

-During class, small group or individual student work assignment on various individualized learning packets (e.g., reading, mathematics, language) assists the teacher in reviewing student work and gives aid and direction as needed to the student.

-Constructs instructional charts and exhibits, sets up and operates audio/visual equipment and utilizes other visual learning devices designed to supplement prescribed courses of study.

-Maintains necessary class records, such as attendance reports, progress charts and other data as required.

-Works with the regular education teacher in modifying the curriculum and instruction for students to modify expectations/goals; lessons/units; assessment/evaluation; provides adaptive materials and devices; provides instructional support and modifies instruction presentations.

-May act as a driver to transport students, and/or perform liaison duties such as driving to location for parent signatures or to deliver information.

SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Education AND Experience Required
Education required: Obtain Associates (or higher) degree OR completed 60 hours of study from an institution of higher education.

Experience required: One year of experience.
Experience should be in the same line of work or one which is basically similar to the education position the employee is being placed in.

SUBSTITUTION:
Bachelor’s degree in Education or equivalent degree meets basic requirements for the position


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

The incumbent of this position is required as an incidental duty to operate a U.S. Government-owned or leased motor vehicle in the performance of duties. A valid State Driver’s license is a prerequisite. A valid State Driver’s license must be maintained as a condition of employment; failure to do so may result in removal from the position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Good distant vision in one eye and ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters are required, glasses permitted.

Ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, is required.

In most instances, an amputation of arm, hand, leg, or foot will not disqualify an applicant for appointment, although it may be necessary that this condition be compensated by use of satisfactory prosthesis.

In addition, applicants must have mental and emotional stability.

The position requires normal physical activity with the work, field travel, and to attendance at meetings and conferences from the duty station.

The investigation may extend beyond the time covered by this form, when necessary to resolve issues.

After a suitability /fitness determination is made, the applicant may also be subject to continuous vetting which may include periodic reinvestigations to ensure the employee is continuing suitability for employment.
