STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe’s need for cultural and economic well-being. In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.

INDIAN PREFERENCE POLICY:

Preference in filling vacancies is given to qualified Indian candidates in accordance with the Indian Preference Act of 1934 (Title 25, USC, Section 472). RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary responsibility of this position is to operate school buses in support of the school, but also is required to drive sedans, pickup trucks, and other vehicles as assigned. There are no passenger capacity limitations.

Operates a school bus transporting students to and from school. The school bus routes are normally over both improved and unimproved roads that become very difficult to traverse during inclement weather. Operates a school bus transporting student groups and employees of the school serving as sponsors and/or coaches of the groups to and from extra-curricular activities such as field trips, sporting events, cultural activities, etc., both on and off the reservation.

Operates motor vehicles such as sedans, station wagons, pickup trucks, vans, etc., for the school; performing trips such as picking up mail, supplies, laundry, transporting children to and from medical facilities, etc. Performs operator maintenance checks before and after each trip.

Performs other maintenance and repairs as required such as performing operator maintenance checks before and after each trip, checking and replacing worn fan belts, changing and repairing flat tires, changing oil and filters, cleaning and replacing air filters, etc. Is required to take vehicles assigned to the school to and

from garages for repair, turn in, and/or maintenance. Is required to operate a vehicle in performing a variety of chores such as a garage pick-up and disposal, safety checks, etc.

Supervises students on buses/vans and assures the safety of students while being transported. Maintains order among school children on the bus, handles routine misbehavior incidents, and reports any serious behavior incidents using approved school procedures.

Observes established regulations and safety procedures. Controls the loading and unloading of passengers, assures that maximum capacity regulation is not exceeded and that only authorized persons are transported. Completes trip reports and preventative maintenance service records. In case of accident, fills out driver’s accident report.

Performs miscellaneous routine duties as assigned such as regular cleaning of the school vehicles, assisting in the school cafeteria, assisting in moving furniture, emptying refuse, loading and delivering of school supplies and equipment, assembling some and assisting in placement of school equipment in classrooms.

BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma or GED and Commercial Drivers License (CDL) is required. Must meet all applicable state and federal requirements for CDL. Must be able to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

No DWI arrest or conviction within the past two years; no more than one DWI conviction in one's lifetime.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

A valid State Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) is required and must be maintained as a condition of employment; failure to do so will result in dismissal from government service. THE POSITION IS SUBJECT TO DRUG TESTING.
Must pass a pre-employment AND annual physical examination as a condition of employment.
Tour of Duty: PART-TIME SEASONAL - 30 hours per week

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to lift over 50 pounds and be in excellent physical condition. Good distance vision in both eyes and ability to read without straining printed material the size of typewritten characters are required: glasses are permitted. Ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, is required. Good hand and foot coordination required. Must pass an annual physical examination as a condition of employment. May be required to wear personal protective equipment.

When performing vehicle maintenance duties, may work in cramped position in the engine compartment and under the vehicle(s). Drives in all kinds of weather conditions over unimproved and improved roads as well as in towns and cities with all kinds of traffic conditions. Is exposed to the possibility of serious injury in case of accidents. Is also exposed to cuts, bruises, burns, etc., when working on vehicles. Maintenance work sites may be dusty, greasy and have noxious fumes.

Employee may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as breathing apparatus, masks, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields in performance of bus maintenance.
